While the world is praising MacKenzie Scott for her string of recent donations, her ex-husband Jeff Bezos has quietly donated around $12 million to fight homelessness in the D.C. area

Powerhouse Jeff Bezos, the world’s third-richest man worth about $245 billion, is keeping an eye, and many billions, on making the world a better place. Yes, he may be an active contender in the space race, dominate headlines for his elite social events, but one cannot ignore the fact he is doing his bit to make the world a better place for many people. The Day 1 Families Fund, a nonprofit founded by Bezos, made a $2 billion commitment in grants to nonprofits fighting homelessness since its launch in 2018. The year 2025 saw $102.5 million to 32 nonprofits nationwide, and a windfall of nearly $12 million to the D.C. region. The recipients were four local grantees: Community Crisis Services, Inc., LifeStyles of Maryland, Friendship Place, and Harford Family House.

“This gift is for the thousands of families who sleep on our streets each night, enduring the cold with nowhere to turn,” said Sandy Washington, CEO of LifeStyles of Maryland, according to Washingtonian. “This donation is a testament to the devotion that has carried us through late nights, tears, countless volunteer hours, community partnerships, and unwavering service.”

Community Crisis Services, which got $5 million, aims to target families with physical or intellectual disabilities, and it will spread the work over five years. Friendship Place, with its $2.5 million, will expand rapid financial assistance so families exit homelessness faster. “The Day 1 Families Fund will continue to strengthen our work to help families rebuild their lives with dignity and ensure more children in our community can grow up safe and housed,” Jean-Michel Giraud, the CEO of Friendship Place, said in a press release. This is the charity’s second donation from the Bezos Day 1 Fund; they received the same amount in 2020 while fighting the homelessness crisis during the pandemic.

MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Jeff Bezos, has been in the news for donating hundreds of millions to charities across the country.

LifeStyles of Maryland, with the gift of $2.5 million, plans to move families out of crisis into sustainable housing pathways across Southern Maryland. Similarly, Harford Family House intends to use the $1.25 million to add emergency shelter capacity for families and deepen partnerships with county public schools. Since 2018, the Day 1 Families Fund has given more than $852 million in grants to organizations like Community of Hope, which helps fight homelessness in the nation’s capital, particularly for pregnant women and vulnerable families.
